Climate action and anarchist organising

Hi Jura friends and supporters,

When it comes to climate change, sustainability and jobs, more and more people are realising that actions speak louder than words. The next few months are a critical time to get active in the climate movement; we invite you to join us at these events...

Climate Camp '09 will be three days of sustainable living and community action at Australia's oldest coal mine - Metropolitan Collieries - on Dharawal land in Helensburgh, 40 mins from Sydney. From October 9 - 11th, Jura people will join hundreds of others pitching our tents among the trees nearby the mine, and we'd love you to come with us! You can also stroll in to the camp for an afternoon - for great workshops, music, art, food and positive climate action. For more info send us an email or check out http://www.climatecamp.org.au/

Come and help build a giant iceberg at the Newtown Hub (opposite Newtown station) as part of the global day of action on October 24th. Local community group, Climate Action Newtown is organising the event along with presentations, music and food at the neighbourhood centre. ---> http://www.350.org/ and http://www.climateactionnewtown.org

Discuss strategies for climate action and prepare for climate camp at the next Jura political talk: "Anarchist organising, the climate movement and climate camp". Many climate action strategies are influenced by anarchist ideas - direct action, decentralised organising, spokescouncils etc. There'll be a short film, a talk by one of the climate camp organisers and Friends of the Earth Sydney activist, and discussion afterwards. ---> 6pm, Friday 2nd Oct at Jura Books

This month's Juracoustic night features Jess Dunbar (http://myspace.com/jessdunbar), a folk inspired songwriter whose soulful voice and music is reminiscent of summer nights at the beach; Olivia Clark, who is part of the Bankstown Talent Advancement Program, will play her whimsical songs with fantastical lyrics inspired by musicians such as Nick Drake and Fleet Foxes; and Stono Caves (http://myspace.com/stonosolo) will once again remind us that a lack of technical ability is no excuse for a lack of self expression, reaching for hope while fighting off capitalism and failed relationships, and using humour to unsettle Islamophobes, all at the same time. There will also be singalongs and plenty of space for whoever else wants to come along and play some songs or do some spoken word, and vegetarian food and drinks by donation. ---> 7pm, Thurs 24th Sept

Jura Books has just launched a facebook page - check it out (and become a fan and invite your friends!) here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Petersham-Australia/Jura-Books/25066184055... We know that facebook is fundamentally and relentlessly pro-capitlist and profit driven, but we hope we can use it and subvert it in some way, to connect with more people and build the radical community. The main part of our web-based presence will continue to be our open-source based and collectively-controlled website http://www.jura.org.au/

There is only one month to go in the Save Jura Raffle, so now is the time to donate! Anarchism in the 21st century

Hi Jura friends and supporters

What form should anarchism take in the 21st century? What relevance does the last 150 years of anarchist history have? What's the difference between anarchism and anarcho-syndicalism? What do anarchist ideas have to offer in light of the current economic and climate crises? What about the tensions between employment, unemployment, and re-employment? Come and consider these questions with us (and raise more) at the first of a series of Jura Talks - Left Libertarian Discussions. Our first talk is on 'Anarchism in the 21st Century'. Sid Parissi will give a half hour presentation, and then there will be political discussion for an hour or so. Hope you can join the conversation.
---> 6pm,  Friday, 18 September. All welcome!

Enjoy a totally different kind of evening at Juracoustic - our monthly night of acoustic music in the library. For more than 6 months Juracoustic has been happening on the last Thursday of every month, with a cornucopia of local and travelling musos. This month, Tired Hands will delight you with fragile songs from centuries old wisdom. And Anna Vo will offer her lovelorn sprinklings of twang ebb under lilting vocals. Feel free to bring a piece of wood with strings, a tube with holes, your humble vocal chords or just your ears to listen. Vegetarian food and refreshments will be available. Donations are appreciated, if you can afford it. Check out http://juracoustic.wordpress.com or http://www.jura.org.au for more info on Juracoustic events.

Jura:

Raffle selling fast

Dear Jura friends and supporters

The Save Jura raffle has been selling fast, and our debt has gone down from $15,000 to $10,000! This is a fantastic effort built on the donations and volunteer work of so many people. We've been selling entries at our workplaces, our universities and at our local pubs! Every ticket we sell helps to save Jura - thank you to everyone who has bought one or more. Special thanks to all the supporters and friends who've volunteered to sell a book of raffle tickets, and to the particularly generous CS ($200), AV ($100), AW ($100), MP ($200), RK ($500), JK ($500), KP ($100), NM ($100), AO ($100), TP ($100) HS ($100), and CP ($100).

We also received one amazing donation of $2,500 from Simon Wood! Simon has been a supporter of Jura and other left-wing projects for about 10 years; he writes 'I'm giving that amount because I'd like to inspire others to give more than they might otherwise give.' (And he wouldn't accept any raffle tickets.) Thanks Simon - you've definitely inspired us in the collective to keep up the struggle!

The special thing about these donations is that they come from a whole range of people - young and old, workers and students, women and men. None of these people are rich, but they are all willing to chip in to keep alive the hope of a radically different world that we are all fighting for.

If you are able to buy some raffle tickets, please do so! There are great prizes, including  a rare artwork valued at $700, $860 worth of books, a weekend away in Byron, vegan cupcakes and pies, organic food vouchers and more (for a picture of the artwork and full details go to http://www.jura.org.au/savejura).

A fantastic opportunity to own a piece of Sydney's political and artistic history - and an inspiring vision of the future. The text on the poster reads: "when the wealth of the land is shared by all; when the tools belong to those who use them; then we will make a new world."
2nd: $500 worth of books from Jura Books.
3rd: $200 book pack from Glebe Books.
4th: $160 book pack from the Co-op Bookshop.
5th: Weekend for 2 in the heart of Byron Bay 1 minute from the beach and the main street, quiet leafy green treed setting. Includes light breakfast, dates negotiable.
