June News - Financial Crisis

Hi Jura friends and supporters,

We don’t often ask for extra financial help, but now is one of those rare and difficult occasions.

A bit of a financial crisis has hit Jura, and we need your help:

• Insurance bill for the building: $2,443.30
• Replacing broken hot water heater: $680
• Normal overheads (telephone, broadband, electricity, water rates, council rates) $700
• Putting back our sign which fell down, and repairing the awning: $500
• Electrical wiring work desperately needed: $300
• New bookshelves needed (and found at a one-off bargain source): $2,000
• Repairing the hole in the library ceiling: $300
• Replacing our wheelie bin sound system (borrowed and not returned): $500
• New Locks and keys: $89

This gives a total of more than $7000 in expenses that need to be paid quickly

or urgently.

Then there is also the mortgage.

Jura is the only anarchist organisation in Sydney that owns a property.
This is an amazing achievement and has taken 30 years of hard work by
many activists. The building is a stable resource for the broader
radical community; it offers a base from which to keep up the fight for
social change over the long term; and in it we can prefigure real
alternatives to the present society.

But our property is not fully paid off. For the last five years we have only managed to pay the interest on the mortgage.
Even though there is only $20,000 left to pay, we only ever pay the
compulsory minimum interest – which is about $2,000 per year (paid
monthly). That’s $2,000 per year wasted on the bank.

This year is Jura’s 30th anniversary. Isn’t it time we paid off the mortgage?

You can make a big difference by donating just a small amount. If you
sign up to be a regular supporter for $5, $10 or $20 per month, you get
a 20% discount on all books in the shop. Or you can make a one-off contribution of whatever you are able – it all adds up.

Jura Books is doing a lot of great things. We sell anarchist and other
radical political books at minimal mark-up. We don’t make money from
selling the books – just enough to pay some of the bills. Many of these
books aren’t available anywhere else in Australia. (We just got a huge
shipment of new books – come in and check them out!) We also put on
films, talks and other events for and about different political
movements. At the moment we are organising four upcoming events:

1) A Jura Working Bee: 12pm, Saturday 23rd June (this Saturday)
2) Jura Meeting: 5.30pm, Friday 6th July.
3) Liberated Words - Spoken word night: 6pm, Friday 13th July.
4) A Forum on grassroots connections between worker and environment struggles: 2pm, Saturday 28th July.

All are welcome to these events– check our website for details (www.jura.org.au).
All this adds up to education, consciousness raising and ultimately
social change. Jura also maintains a unique archive of political
posters and books – this also costs money. And we occasionally publish
books and pamphlets. All of us are volunteers; help us to keep doing
this useful work.

We need your help; please contribute. The easiest way to do this would
be to send an email to jura -at- jura.org.au telling us you can help. We
will get back to you and discuss the best way to donate.

Alternatively you can come in to Jura to donate personally, or post a
cheque or money order made out to Jura Books, or put a donation into
our following account - email us for details.

But please do email us to let us know that you’ve donated or want to
donate. So that we can thank you and keep track of our finances. If you
want your money to go to a specific thing (eg the mortgage) please tell
us and we will oblige.

Thanks for all your support in the past, and your help in the future,

The Jura Collective.
