Welcome Visitor:

The Jura Financial Review for 2005

Please note that this is the first
attempt in a long time to get the Jura Books accounting system in
some sort of presentable order. Also note that these are the accounts
for the bookshop itself, not the Overhead Expenses Account, nor the
ARI Building Maintence/Repayment Account. The figures will make any
professional accountant shudder, but they are a beginning, enough to
give us a base line for future better, and transparent, accounting.
We also need to sort out a few other financial matters, such as our
banking and the shop's bookkeeping practices (the day book, the web
site, the on-consignment system and the mail orders). On the whole,
we can report that the Jura Books situation (these accounts) is quite
good and improving all the time. Our sales are up, we have a much
bigger proportion of new stock on the shelves and are getting into
new distributors/publishers; although we still emphasise the
anarchist traders such as AK Press and Anarres Book Distributors.

The re-stocking of the shelves that we
have been emphasising for the last five years is now noticably bearing fruit. If you
have not been into Jura for a while, you will get quite a surprise; the process started off
slowly but has gained a momentum over the last year. A very important point to note is that, for
the very first time in several years, we are not in debt to AK Press, in fact we have a small
credit with them; we again thank them for their understanding and
support. You will also notice that December saw the new Collective
policy of placing 20% of books takings into the Bills Account, it
amounted in that month to $328.

The Collective has grown in the last
year with several new members joining & the opening times
improving. Other groups have started using Jura as a meeting space.
We have held several fundraising events at Jura such as three film
nights and the 28th anniversary celebrations; these have been very
important in bringing in much needs funds to the Overhead Expences
Account. Several members of the collective and supporters have held
book stalls at various events in Sydney and in other cities in NSW.
The events at Jura and the bookstalls outside of the shop have been
significant opportunities to increase sales, besides being important
political events. Some of these were the This Is Not Art Festival,
SubPlot (an anarchist event simultaneous with the Sydney Social
Forum), and The Sydney Social Forum.

Much effort has also been placed in
updating the Jura website. This has included reorganising the site,
adding a PayPal donations and book-ordering system, having new titles listed, an events
calendar among other features. Lots
of work has been done with the Fanya Baron Library Collection also
but there is much work still to do to make it a more useable library.
We have also re commenced the Friday Night Discussions under the
title, TalkShop at the BookShop. There have been three very
successful Talkshops - 'What Anarchism Is and Isn't', 'Anarchism and
Feminism' and 'The New Industrial Relations Laws'.

It's been a very busy and successful
year but, as always, there is still a lot to do. There is a special need to thank all those who
have supported us in the past, in buying books, donatin money for the bills, helping run stalls
and events and with building maintenance work. We do the voluntary
work in and around the shop, but you are critical to helping it all
happen - thanks.
