Red and Black Forum: David Goodway on Damned Fools in Utopia and Seeds Beneath the Snow
440 Parramatta Rd, Petersham
Red and Black Forum - October 2012. A continuing series of monthly talks and discussions at Jura on different aspects of anarchism.
David Goodway takes the increasingly unpopular view (in the UK) that the historic British anarchist movement was numerically and socially insignificant. But he argues in Anarchist Seeds beneath the Snow (republished this year in a second edition) that there has been an impressive and influential literary tradition, both of those who identified themselves anarchists such as Oscar Wilde, Herbert Read, Alex Comfort and Colin Ward, near anarchists like Edward Carpenter, John Cowper Powys, Aldous Huxley and Chris Pallis (aka Maurice Brinton) as well as the left libertarians William Morris, George Orwell and E.P. Thompson. In this talk he will also highlight his friend Nicolas Walter, a second selection of whose writings, Damned Fools in Utopia, he has recently edited.
