Welcome Visitor:

35 years of Anarchism in Sydney

TO OUR DEAR JURA FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,

Celebrating 35 years
of Anarchism in Sydney!! Welcome to the December edition of our monthly email:

But
before we get into talk of Jura's 35th birthday next
Sunday (yep 35 years!!!) and other goings on, here is a quote from
Alfredo Bonanno on anarchism:

What
is anarchism? What does it mean to be an anarchist? Why? Because it
is not a definition that can be made once and for all, put in a safe
and considered a patrimony to be tapped little by little... Anarchism
is not a concept that can be locked up in a word like a gravestone...
It is a way of conceiving life, and life, young or old as we may be,
old people or children, is not something definitive: it is a stake we
must play day after day. (Alfredo
Bonanno,
The
Anarchist Tension
1996)

JURA
BOOKS TURNS 35!!
THIS SUNDAY 9TH OF DECEMBER 3PM @ JURA BOOKS

Jura
turns 35 this year! Can you believe it? 35 years as an inspirational
pillar of Australian Anarchism. An incredible achievement for our
collective project. Come on down to the bookshop this Sunday arvo and
help us celebrate with tasty treats, some rollicking tunes, our
infamous homebrew beers and the start of our books sale. We're
kicking off at 3pm and would love to see you there. Any ol' timers
who were around in the early days—come share your stories and check
out all the effort that has gone in to Jura this year! For more
information on the history of Jura Books, have a read of this:
http://jura.org.au/history.

BOOK
SALE!! STARTS 9TH DECEMBER

To
coincide with our 35th
birthday, Jura is having a book sale. 20% off all new books (regular
financial supporters will get an extra 10%, making a total discount
for them of 30%) AND
a super cheap second-hand books sale, too. Starts on the 9th
of December ending on the evening of the 16th
of December. All income goes to the maintenance of the building,
paying our suppliers and assisting the local, national and
international anarchist community. So time to come in and splurge on
some awesome texts and help keep the project going for another 35
years!

ANOTHER
YEAR AT JURA...

2012
marked another busy year for Jura Books. Apart from keeping the shop
open, cleaning the premises, monthly meetings, and all the extra
things that come along with running Jura, we also organised some
great events at Jura this year: Including a regular monthly film
afternoon, monthly talks, tons of gigs and we co-edited an Australian
anarchist journal. Importantly we had a monthly discussion group with
the Red and Black Forums, an excellent avenue for the sharing of
knowledge and the development of anarchist ideas. Thanks to the Red
and Black crew for their huge efforts!
One
of our legend collective members digitised the newspaper of the
Industrial Workers of the World in Australia, 'Direct Action',
available on the Fanya Baron Library page
http://jura.org.au/library/directaction. Jura
also hosted the Worker's Struggle Conference earlier in the year and
the Decolonise DIY Punkfest! Plus of course, Jura played an important
role in the dissemination of anarchist literature and ideas, with
bookstalls throughout Sydney

But these actions take time, effort and love! We
are all volunteers and welcome new contributors to Jura. Don't be
shy! Come on down and we'll make you feel at home.

FANYA
BARON LIBRARY OVERFLOWING WITH GREAT READS

Jura library 2011

A
huge amount of work has been going on in the Fanya Baron Library: new
shelves, new books, archiving of anarchist journals and sorting out
the books we are minding for Black Rose. The place looks great and is
overflowing with awesome reads! Come on in and check it out.

JURA
WEBSHOP IS COMING VERY SOON

Jura
is well under way to building an online web shop, using entirely
open-source software, including OpenCart. Pipsy has been doing
exciting work in setting up a Jura web-shop, already about 220 books
are have now been logged into the system. The idea is to make our
range of books, DVDs, zines, newspapers, shirts and everything else
available to comrades who aren't physically able to visit our space.
It might also be able to do e-books, accept various currencies
(including BitCoins), and allow us to accept eftpos and credit cards
in the shop. There's still plenty to be figured out and done - but
we're making good progress and hope to launch the website early next
year. If you are interested in helping out, email us!

"SEDITION"
EDITION 2 – FINAL FINAL CALL OUT. FINISH WRITING!!

Email
the Jura collective if you would like to submit an article for the
upcoming edition of Sedition. Due December 16th!
Sedition is an exciting Australian anarchist journal, a mutual
collaboration between two anarchist collectives in Australia- the
Melbourne Anarchist Club and Jura. This project is a constructive
medium for discussing the ways forward for anarchist groups and
anarchism in Australia—importantly, both in theory and praxis. We
aim to produce thought-provoking literature that challenges the
established order.

Edition
1 is available online at www.anarchy.org.au

CLOSING
OVER LATE DECEMBER-EARLY JAN

We
are taking a break over the holiday period. Jura Will Be Closed 24th
Dec to 5th Jan. Opening up again with more stimulating events
planned.

ANARCHIST
SUMMER SCHOOL!

12th
– 13th January, 2013 @ Queen Alexandra House, 347 Old Cleveland Rd,
Coorparoo. QLD

This
year, the fantastic Anarchist Summer School is being organised by a local
collective in Brisbane: “We hope to bring together all anarchists
from across Brisbane, and Australia in a week-end of sharing and
learning.
We
particularly want to bridge the generation gap that exists in the
Anarchist movement. It is important to be able to share the
experiences of the past, with the actions and passions of the
present”. A number of Jura collective members will be there!
Should be a great and free event. For more info check out
