Jura's ecological footprint

Yep, I quite agree with you Meela about our need for more wholeness in our workings. And, although much more work needs to be done, our tentative moves towards developing strategic plans for Jura as a whole, is a move in that direction.

Indeed, if we consider this (EMF) issue as a part of Jura's consideration of our wider environmental impact, then it already falls within one of our suggested strategic considerations.
As we develop our Strategic Directions documents we may well find that issues like this will be able to be viewed within a strategic policy framework (a flexible one, but a framework, nontheless - so that our decisions will have less of a patchwork approach).

Ciao, Sid.

I tend to think that Jura

I tend to think that Jura should aim to have a low ecological footprint if possible... but there is a tension between that, and some of the facts of working without resources in an old building in Petersham. I'd be great to use very little steam-generated power, but we don't have the money to insulate our old building so we have to use fans to avoid boiling in summer or heaters to avoid freezing in winter. And we also use computers ... which put out heaps of radiation and use power.

Then there is the problem of pests - we have a commerical building in the inner west. How do we deal effectively and ecologically with that?

Exposure to harmful radiation at Jura

I agree that wireless internet will be a source of radio waves at Jura, and this might have a biological impact on us... But I reckon Jura is already full of TV signals, commercial radio signals, microwaves, infrared waves, ultraviolet light waves from our fluoride bulbs, and especially audible sound waves from Parramata Road... Until we get rid of all those sources of harmful radiation, I think it is foolish to care about something that might at least make our work less stressful.

The world spins and the tables turn

Some things we can do...

Some things we can do might be...

  • go to the watershed and to Alfalfa House and ask them about environmentall sound cleaning and pest control. I know that the watershed sells a "cleaning kit" with baking soda, vinegar, etc and a handy instruction book showing how to use them all for about $30. It might be a good investment.
  • try to work with other collectives to meet our needs... like working with a food co-op to get food for our parties, and brewing to get beer, and ordering books from OS with Barricade Books or Black Rose to save on postage and warehousing.
  • Plant trees. Jeremy has done some lovely tree-planting last week. There are now a couple of natives in lovely pots out the back. It really adds to the charm of our barren carpark  and help to retain water in the local atmosphere.
  • Turning off lights, using long-life lights, etc
  • Maybe we can make a solar oven?
  • Um, can't think of anything else....oh except: asking people to wash their own plates at functions coz it conserves my energy!

not much chance of succeeding in anything if we don't have the skills or confidence to get things done... Its a bit rich to make trouble before you make an alternative
